The Filson Henley Guide Sweater, originally conceived by and for waterfowl hunters, is sewn in the USA with 100% merino wool. The waxed-cotton cape, made with our signature oil finish Shelter Cloth from the iconic British Millerain, protects from driving rain and snow. The four-button placket provides ventilation versatility, and the right shoulder shooting patch eases the bite of hot 12-gauge duck loads.
The USA-sourced wool comes from merino sheep prized for their long, fine fleece. Merino wool's wavy crimp yields a soft and sturdy fabric with natural memory and shape retention. Merino wool fibers consist of thousands of tiny filaments sheathed within overlapping scales that are naturally water-resistant, and any moisture that does penetrate the fiber is wicked to the tips for evaporation. This capillary action is what allows wool to absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling damp or clammy.
The fine merino fleece is tightly spun into firm yarns before knitting, creating surprising density and a smooth, non-scratchy surface that resists pilling. Rib-knit cuffs, waist and collar provide durable shape retention for years of reliability.
